If you’re a Google Workspace administrator and you get hit with the frustrating message:
❗ “We want to make sure that it’s really you trying to complete this action.”
Even when you’re using a familiar device or network—this guide walks you through the exact steps to bypass it using Google Admin Console.
❓ Why This Happens
Google triggers this error when it suspects an unusual login or sensitive action, even from an admin. It might ask you to:
- ✅ Use a known device
- ✅ Use a familiar Wi-Fi network
- 🚫 Or contact the admin (which is… you)
If retrying in Incognito mode or a mobile device doesn’t help, follow these exact steps.
✅ Step-by-Step Fix (Google-Approved)
🔐 Step 1: Enable Account Recovery in Admin Console
This allows you or other users to regain access without harsh verification blocks.
- Go to your Google Admin Console
- Navigate to:
📁 Main Menu → Security → Authentication → Account Recovery
- Under User Account Recovery, turn ON:
✅ "Allow users and non-super admins to recover their account"
- Click 💾 Save
🔎 Step 2: Check and Disable 2-Step Verification (2FA)
You’ll need to temporarily disable 2FA for the affected user.
- Go to:
📁 Directory → Users
- Click on the affected user’s name
- In the User Details panel, click ➡️ Security
- Locate the section labeled 2-Step Verification
- If it’s ON, click it and:
- Click
❌ Turn off 2-step verification
- Confirm when prompted
- Click
🔁 You can re-enable this after access is restored.
⚙️ Step 3: Temporarily Disable Login Challenge
This removes the extra security layer triggered during recovery attempts.
- Still in the Security tab for the user
- Scroll down to Login Challenge
- Click
🛑 Turn off for 10 minutes
⚠️ This window is short—make sure to try logging in during this time.
🌐 Step 4: Retry Login Using Incognito Mode
- Open Google Chrome
- Click
⋮ (3 dots)
→ Select 🕵️♀️ New Incognito Window - Try to log in again with the affected account
🟢 In my case, it worked on the third try. Be patient and try multiple times if needed.
🧹 Step 5: Clean Up (Re-enable Security)
Once you’re successfully in:
- 🔒 Turn 2-Step Verification back ON for the user
- 🔁 Re-enable the Login Challenge
- 📋 Document the change in case of audit or compliance requirements
🎯 Summary
Step | Action |
---|---|
✅ 1 | Enable Account Recovery |
🔒 2 | Disable 2FA temporarily |
⚙️ 3 | Disable Login Challenge for 10 minutes |
🌐 4 | Try again via Incognito login |
🔁 5 | Restore security settings afterward |
💬 Final Notes
Even admins can get blocked by overzealous security prompts. Thankfully, this method works without needing external support or user data. Let me know if this helped you in the comments or if you faced any variation of this issue!
